The United States left behind significant amounts of hazardous waste after withdrawing from military bases and facilities in Greenland, according to a report by Danish newspaper Politiken.
The newspaper's investigation, which examined at least 36 former US military sites, found widespread environmental contamination across the island. Journalists discovered hundreds of rusting barrels containing diesel fuel, millions of liters of low-level radioactive water, old pipes, cables, vehicle batteries, and other waste.
The total amount of abandoned waste is estimated to reach several thousand tons, the report said.
According to Politiken, the waste contains heavy metals and other hazardous substances that pose a threat to the environment, including marine ecosystems and wildlife along Greenland's coastline.
