Patricia Scotland: Azerbaijan plays important role in advancing climate agenda

Azerbaijan has played an important role in advancing the climate agenda and strengthening international cooperation in this sphere, Nizami Ganjavi International Center representative Patricia Scotland said during a panel discussion at Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), Report informs.

According to her, Azerbaijan, by hosting COP29, was able to establish interaction between countries and regions and strengthen trust in the international climate process.

"Azerbaijan has done something outstanding by creating a bridge for interaction between the parties," Scotland said.

She noted that the 56 countries of the Commonwealth represent five regions of the world, and their unification made it possible to create a platform for change.

According to Scotland, the significance of COP29 lies not only in reaching an agreement on the climate finance goal of $300 billion per year and setting a target of $1.3 trillion.

She emphasized that it was important not only to attract financing but also to determine how these funds will be used to achieve the necessary changes.

Scotland also noted that thanks to the active work of Azerbaijan, it was possible to strengthen the trust of small and developing states, which are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
