Deputy Minister: Caspian Sea level decline gains global attention

In recent years, the Caspian Sea"s declining water level has increasingly become a matter of international concern, according to Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Rauf Hajiyev, Report informs.

Speaking at a session within the 2026 World Environment Day (WED) in Baku, Hajiyev emphasized that protecting nature is a shared responsibility.

"This event is a good opportunity to strengthen cooperation between science, policy, and society. The issue we are discussing today is of special importance for our region. The decline observed in the Caspian Sea in recent years is a serious concern, with impacts already felt in coastal ecosystems, economic activities, and local communities," he noted.

The deputy minister explained that research continues into the causes of the decline, including climate change, river inflows, hydrological processes, and water use. Bilateral expert working groups have been established to exchange data, foster scientific collaboration, and prepare adaptation measures.

Hajiyev further stressed that Azerbaijan will continue to support dialogue, cooperation, and joint action on Caspian issues: "We believe that science-based approaches and mutual trust will help find common solutions for the future of the Caspian."
