United States of America (also known as the United States, U.S., or America) is a federal constitutional republic comprising fifty states, a federal district (Washington, D.C.), and several overseas territories. Spanning over 9.8 million square kilometers across North America—with non-contiguous states and territories reaching into the Arctic and the Pacific Ocean—it is the third-largest country in the world by total area.
