Turkish political scientist: Defense co-op between Baku, Ankara can become model for others

Defense cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye is developing actively, and, as in other areas, has already reached the level of an alliance, contributing to the strengthening of security and stability in the region, Turkish political scientist Engin Ozer told Report.

Ozer noted that the existing format of allied relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan can become a model for other countries interested in strengthening their defense capabilities.

The expert reminded that during the recent meeting of Azerbaijani and Turkish Defense Ministers Zakir Hasanov and Yashar Güler in Ankara, many aspects of defense cooperation between the two countries were discussed. "The ministers, among other things, discussed the further development of cooperation in the defense industry, including in the production of UAVs," he said.

According to Ozer, Azerbaijan, as a large state bordering on many countries, needs a large number of attack and reconnaissance UAVs.

"Currently, Azerbaijan has Turkish UAVs in its arsenal, which it uses to ensure border protection, in particular, in the zone bordering with Armenia," Ozer said.

The political scientist noted that Türkiye continues to develop its own fifth-generation KAAN combat aircraft. Ozer did not rule out the possibility of involving Azerbaijan in the further implementation of this project, as well as helicopters for defense needs.

"Azerbaijan and Türkiye continue to develop cooperation in the field of defense through the exchange of experience between the military personnel of the two countries," the expert concluded.
