Tokayev nominates Erlan Karin for Kazakhstan vice president

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has nominated Erlan Karin for the vice president post at the first meeting of the newly formed Kurultai, according to Kazakh media reports.

Under Kazakhstan's Constitution, the vice president may assume the powers of the head of state if the president leaves office early due to voluntary resignation, sustained inability to perform presidential duties for health reasons, removal from office, or death.

If the vice president is unable to assume the presidential powers, the Constitution provides for the transfer of authority to the chair of the Kurultai, followed by the prime minister.

Tokayev also nominated Olzhas Bektenov for the post of prime minister of Kazakhstan. The nomination effectively allows Bektenov to retain his current position, as he has served as prime minister since February 6, 2024.
