Prosecutor General of Armenia proposes to reinstate death sentence

The Prosecutor General of Armenia, Artur Davtyan, proposed to establish the basis of the constitutional law regarding the application of the death sentence for high treason, Report informs via News.am.

"The study of the materials of the criminal cases initiated on cases of open treason registered during and after the 44-day war shows that the most severe crime against security by the services of the enemy state is treason. Involving the citizens of the Republic of Armenia in espionage and intelligence networks, the use of modern technologies, especially in the background of current security challenges in the region, reveals the issue of strengthening the criminal-legal fight against this type. Toughening of crime and punishment policy is a priority. Such extreme manifestations of treason are recorded. Taking into account the importance of the problem, the prosecutor's office studied the scope of Armenia's international obligations in this field and determined that our country does not have a direct international legal obligation regarding the absolute prohibition of the death penalty," Artur Davtyan noted.
