The Azerbaijan Human Rights Society ƏRK, operating in Paris, has issued a statement regarding the appointment of Iran as the chairman of the Social Forum of the UN Human Rights Council, Report informs.
The document says that the head of the UN Human Rights Council for 2023 had sent a letter to member states.
The letter says that the Social Forum of the UN Human Rights Council will be held on November 2-3 at the UN Headquarters in Geneva, and the event will be chaired by Ambassador Ali Bahrain, Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Headquarters in Geneva.
The representative of Iran has been appointed chairman of the Social Forum of the UN Human Rights Council. This event will explore the role of technology in protecting human rights, including in the post-pandemic period. The Islamic Republic has set a “record” in this matter. Two days ago, the UN Human Rights Council expressed deep concern about the spate of executions in Iran. The council said in a statement that this year the Iranian government has executed an average of 10 people every week, calling the number “terrible.” The council demanded that the Iranian government stop the executions.
The statement emphasizes that Iran is one of the few countries in the world that is accused of gross and persistent violations of human rights:
“The UN Human Rights Council appointed a special rapporteur for this. However, the authorities of the Islamic Republic did not allow the Special Rapporteur to enter Iran. The Azerbaijan Human Rights Society ƏRK announces a protest against the nomination of a representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the chairman of the Social Forum of the UN Human Rights Council. Because Iran violates human rights in all areas, including the rights of national minorities, and does not comply with the World Charter of Human Rights. The ƏRK Society, along with other human rights activists, will make every effort to achieve the cancellation of Iran's chairmanship of the Social Forum of the Human Rights Council.”
