Georgia plans to deport at least 4,000 illegal migrants this year, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.
Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze said that, around 20,000 illegal migrants were living in Georgia last year, according to preliminary estimates, and the government is actively working to address the issue.
He noted that the Migration Department under the Ministry of Internal Affairs has stepped up its efforts to tackle illegal migration.
"Over the past 12 months, more illegal migrants have been deported from Georgia than during the previous 10 years combined. This year, we have set an even more ambitious target. Under our plan, at least 4,000 illegal migrants will be removed from the country. This will allow us to virtually eliminate the problem of illegal migration over the next four years. This is one of the most important tasks for Georgia," the prime minister said.
