Foreign Policy: Baku, Yerevan may sign peace treaty in 2026

The authoritative American magazine Foreign Policy has published an extensive article devoted to the negotiations between Baku and Yerevan and the prospects for normalizing relations in the South Caucasus, Report informs.

The article emphasizes that the August 8 meeting in Washington became a "watershed" in the long-standing conflict.

The publication points out that the framework agreement opens the way to unblocking regional trade and investment, and also secures the United States' status as an important player in the region, traditionally in the sphere of influence of Russia, Türkiye and Iran.

Foreign Policy notes that the Donald Trump administration expects the signing and ratification of a full-fledged peace treaty by the end of 2026.

The authors of the article emphasize that the turning point was Azerbaijan's victory in the Second Karabakh War in 2020 and the final restoration of sovereignty in 2023. This, according to the magazine, created a fundamentally new reality.

Foreign Policy concludes that the framework agreement between Baku and Yerevan was a significant step towards ending one of the region's most violent conflicts.

"One way or another, the agreement signifies the start of a new era in the South Caucasus," reads the article.
