Hunters shot five bears in the Turochaksky District of Russia's Altai Republic over the past 24 hours following a predator attack on a woman at a tourist camp, the regional government press service said.
According to Russian media, cited by Report, a curfew from 20:00 to 10:00 is in effect in the district. Mobile patrols consisting of police officers and hunters are on duty at night.
"Bears have begun appearing in villages, so regulating their population is a necessary measure to ensure residents' safety," the government said.
The bear attack occurred overnight on August 19 in the village of Artybash. The animal dragged a young woman into a forested area, where it mauled her to death. Following the incident, the Ministry of Natural Resources issued additional licenses for the shooting of bears.
