Expert: Baku’s refusal to participate in Granada meeting due to current political realities

Azerbaijan's refusal to participate in the Granada meeting stemmed from the current political realities, said the Director General of the Caspian Institute for Strategic Studies, Igor Korotchenko, commenting on Baku’s decision not to participate in the five-party meeting scheduled for October 5 in Granada, Spain, Report informs.

“The diplomatic superiority is on the side of Azerbaijan. If such a decision is made, then I believe that it was calculated, verified and best suits the current political realities,” Korotchenko stated.

In his opinion, from the point of view of diplomacy and geopolitics, this is the right decision, especially since Baku has strategic, political, and military superiority.

The expert noted that the European Union and France take an absolutely anti-Azerbaijani position:

“In these conditions, when the meeting was planned not one-on-one with Nikol Pashinyan, but with several European players behind him, Baku, of course, wanted to balance the situation by inviting the Turkish President to the meeting. And since this proposal was rejected by Armenia and its European partners, Baku considered it impossible for itself to have a format in which Türkiye would not be present.”

Korotchenko noted that Azerbaijan has the upper hand in all factors.

“Time, historical justice, the situation on the ground - all these factors play on the side of Azerbaijan. If Pashinyan and his patrons in Europe are not yet ready for a frank dialogue, including Ankara, well, then the time has not come yet,” concluded the Russian expert.
