European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that only the people of Armenia have the right to determine their future and choose a path toward European integration.
According to Report's European bureau, Kos made the remarks ahead of a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, commenting on recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding Armenia and its European aspirations.
She stressed that the European Union will continue to support Armenia amid growing pressure from Moscow.
"Only the people of Armenia can decide on their future. The latest meeting of the European Political Community and the EU–Armenia summit have shown which path they want to choose. And Europe will support them," Kos said.
She added that Brussels is aware of the "geopolitical dynamics" in the region and will closely monitor developments.
Over the weekend, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that he does not welcome Armenia's closer ties with Europe and, for the first time, directly linked Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine to Kyiv's decision to pursue a European path. The remarks were interpreted in the EU as a signal of pressure on countries considering closer alignment with the bloc.
