Erdogan: Turkey offered Russia to switch to national currencies in trade

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara had previously offered Moscow to switch to national currencies in trade, Report informs referring to RIA Novosti.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on March 23 that Russia is transferring payments for gas supplies to unfriendly countries into rubles, noting that it makes no sense to supply Russian goods to the EU and the US and receive payment in their currency.

Putin instructed the Central Bank and the Cabinet of Ministers within a week to determine the procedure for transactions with Europe in rubles. At the same time, he said that Russia would continue to supply gas in volumes and at prices fixed in earlier contracts, as the country values its reputation.

“We have already offered trade in Russia’s national currency at normal times. We said: let’s do it in the national currency, in rubles and Turkish lira,” the Turkish leader told reporters on the plane after returning from Brussels.
