Baghaei explains why Iran blocked Strait of Hormuz

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the country's security, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said.

According to Report, citing Tasnim, Baghaei said the waterway remains under Iran's control.

"Under the current circumstances, we have the right to take measures to protect the country's security. The Strait of Hormuz is currently under Iran's control. We will provide further information on the progress and outcome of consultations with Oman on its management," Baghaei said.

He also said the situation in the strait had become somewhat safer following a deal reached in Islamabad, adding that Tehran had fulfilled its obligations under the memorandum. However, he said the United States violated the agreement 23 days later.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman linked the instability in the Strait of Hormuz to US attacks.

"If the international community is concerned about rising fuel prices, it should blame the United States," Baghaei added.
