Stiell calls for faster implementation of Paris Agreement commitments

The implementation of the Paris Agreement commitments must be advanced significantly further and on a faster timeline, starting with the current Climate Week through COP31 and beyond, said Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in a video address at the opening ceremony of the Fourth Climate Week of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (CW4), Report informs.

According to Stiell, the impacts of climate change continue to intensify despite the irreversible transition toward clean energy.

"Every region is facing increasingly serious consequences - extreme heat, floods, droughts, wildfires and food insecurity. Every economy is also being affected by these factors. Therefore, every fraction of a degree matters," he said.

He stressed the importance of implementing the climate agenda in practice, bringing governments together with businesses, investors, cities, regions and civil society, and turning plans into real projects.

"This week is intended to bring all these stakeholders together to accelerate implementation, develop partnerships and attract investment," the UNFCCC Executive Secretary said.

He also highlighted electrification, the development of power grids and energy storage systems, zero-waste production, food security, the creation of resilient and efficient cities, and stronger measures to address climate-related health risks among the priorities.

"This is about clean and reliable energy, lower costs, safer housing, resilient food systems, healthier communities and a more stable economy. These are outcomes that people can see and feel," Stiell stressed.

He called on Climate Week participants to focus on practical implementation and demonstrate that "the world chooses action and concrete results over delay."
