The water level in France's Loire River has reached a critically low mark, Report informs, citing BFMTV.
Due to heat and drought, the riverbed is becoming increasingly exposed with each passing day.
According to Jean-Paul Huet, mayor of Loireauxence, a town located on the banks of the Loire, the difference between the current water level and the level recorded in February, when the region experienced historic flooding, is 8 to 9 meters.
He also expressed concern that temporary restrictions on the use of drinking water could be introduced in the town if no rainfall occurs soon.
The shallowing of the Loire, like other major European rivers, including the Rhine and the Danube, is linked to insufficient rainfall and abnormally hot weather observed in recent months.
