Waltz reveals US demands on Canada during trade talks

During trade negotiations with Canada, the US presidential administration demanded that Ottawa increase tariffs on Chinese goods to prevent their transshipment through Canada into the United States, US Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz said in an interview with Fox News, Report informs.

"What we said, what the team said was, look, if we're going to give you very favorable tariff status, we're going to give you the best deal of any other country that we trade with in the world. You can't then let China take advantage what they call trans shipment and start dumping their goods into Canada just to dump their goods in the United States," Waltz noted.

Waltz added that Washington issued a similar demand to Mexico, and the Mexican authorities agreed to it.

United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated last week that Ottawa had rejected a bilateral trade deal that Washington considered advantageous.

In connection with this, 50% US tariffs on imports of select categories of Canadian goods took effect on August 22. Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney confirmed the suspension of trade talks with the US and announced the introduction of retaliatory tariffs, which are expected to take effect on September 8.

Later, US President Donald Trump announced plans to introduce 50% tariffs on Canadian automobiles, auto parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027.
