Von der Leyen: EU launching first phase of accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova

The European Union will open the first negotiating cluster with Ukraine and Moldova in the coming days, marking the transition to the next stage of the EU accession process, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said while presenting the 21st package of sanctions against Russia in Brussels, Report informs.

"In the coming days, we will open the first cluster with Ukraine and Moldova. This effectively opens the door to the next stage of the accession process – the official start of negotiations," she said.

Von der Leyen noted that Ukraine continues to comply with EU demands despite the ongoing war and the difficulties it faces.

"Ukraine is implementing reform after reform, despite its cities being attacked. Ukraine has done its part," the head of the European Commission stated.

According to her, the EC is ready to continue supporting Ukraine on its path to EU membership.

"Now is the time for us to do our part. We have a historic opportunity to do so," von der Leyen said.
