Venezuela earthquake death toll reaches 5,546

The number of people killed in the earthquake in Venezuela has risen to 5,546, according to the country's National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodríguez, who shared the update on Telegram, Report informs.

According to the government's daily update, 16,740 people were injured and 17,907 residents were left homeless. A total of 190 buildings were completely destroyed, while another 856 sustained serious damage.

Rescue operations managed to save 6,462 people. In addition, 47,942 victims received medical assistance, and 128,324 families received aid. Currently, 23,811 people are accommodated in temporary camps, while nearly 11 million tons of food have been delivered to those affected.

On the night of June 25, a 7.1‑magnitude earthquake struck northern Venezuela. The US Geological Survey later reported two additional tremors of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, occurring within 40 seconds. The country's leadership declared a state of emergency, and nearly 1,500 aftershocks have been recorded since the main quakes.
