The growth of urbanization without the development of the urban environment and social infrastructure is becoming one of the key threats to modern megacities, stated Professor Valeria Fedeli of the Polytechnic University of Milan (Politecnico di Milano) at an event within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.
According to her, many countries face a situation where urbanization develops faster than the mechanisms for ensuring quality of life, social integration, and infrastructural resilience are formed.
"We are producing urbanization detached from the urban environment and quality of life," she said.
She emphasized that residents of peripheral areas and small territories are increasingly being deprived of access to housing, social support, and economic opportunities, which intensifies the pressure on megacities.
