US Senate votes to tighten sanctions on Russia and Iran - UPDATED

The US Senate has voted in favor of a bill to tighten American sanctions against Russia and Iran.

According to Report, the vote was broadcast on the website of the upper chamber of the US Congress.

A total of 86 senators voted in favor of the initiative, while 11 opposed it. The bill is expected to be considered by the House of Representatives in September. Some lawmakers in the lower chamber may oppose the legislation because it includes another increase in tariffs.

On August 7, senators also rejected an amendment that would have stripped the US president of the authority to impose tariffs on countries importing Russian oil or gas.

The vote took place before senators left for a five-week summer recess.
