The US Secret Service made a series of errors in July 2024 that prevented it from stopping the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, who was then running as the Republican presidential candidate, Report informs.
These conclusions are contained in an update compiled by the US Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General.
According to the document's materials, the Secret Service failed to take advantage of several opportunities to detect, warn about, and prevent the assassination attempt by Thomas Crooks on Trump during a campaign rally on July 13, 2024.
The update specifically notes that the agency's agents failed to detect Crooks's use of an unmanned aerial vehicle to survey the area.
This occurred due to an insufficient level of training of one of the agents, as well as technical equipment malfunctions. The document also points out that the service's representatives did not establish a joint operations center with the participation of local law enforcement agencies.
As a result, they were deprived of information that numerous eyewitnesses had deemed Crooks' behavior suspicious. In addition, there was an insufficient number of agents at the event venue, and adequate measures were not taken to eliminate the threat of gunfire from the rooftop of the building where Crooks had positioned himself.
