Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been elected President of the United Nations General Assembly, Report informs referring to foreign media.
Current UN General Assembly Chairman Volkan Bozkir announced the results of a secret ballot in favor of Shahid, while two of 193 participating countries abstained from voting. Bozkir said Shahid has ‘extensive experience in multilateral diplomacy.’
Shahid noted that he will strive for a ‘presidency of hope’ when he takes office for a one-year term in September, just before the annual meeting of world leaders.
