UK could face food shortages due to extreme heat and drought

The United Kingdom could face food shortages as drought conditions caused by an ongoing heatwave threaten agricultural production.

According to Report, citing the Mirror, the warning was issued by the National Farmers' Union (NFU).

"Farmers struggling to protect crops amid extreme heat are warning that prolonged drought could lead to food shortages in the UK," the newspaper reported.

NFU President Tom Bradshaw called on UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham to take emergency measures and provide farmers with tax incentives for building water storage facilities.

Some parts of the country have not seen rainfall for more than a month, with the lack of moisture slowing crop growth, particularly wheat. Local residents say wheat crops have reached only half their usual height.

Heat warnings have been issued in eight regions of England this week, with temperatures expected to rise to 34°C.
