US President Donald Trump said that Washington and Tehran are scheduled to hold talks on August 3.
According to Report, the US leader made the remarks to journalists aboard his plane while traveling to Washington.
Trump said the negotiations would begin later in the day and expressed hope that the dialogue would help prevent further escalation.
"We will be engaging with them through negotiations. They will begin tomorrow afternoon. I hope that happens. It would save many lives and help avoid further tensions," the US president said.
Trump also claimed that Washington and Tehran have already reached an agreement regarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, the next step will be to conclude an agreement on Iran's nuclear program and the country's denuclearization.
"There is a deal on the Strait of Hormuz, and then there will be a deal on the nuclear program, or, as I call it, the denuclearization of Iran," the US president said.
