Trump says most NATO countries agree to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP

Most NATO countries have agreed to increase annual defense spending to 5% of GDP, US President Donald Trump said at the NATO summit in Ankara, Report informs.

According to him, participants discussed during a working session the progress made by NATO countries toward achieving the new target.

"Some have really answered the call, while others are making serious changes and will fulfill their commitments. I urge all countries to accelerate their plans and reach this target as soon as possible," Trump said.

The US president recalled that at last year's NATO summit, allies reached what he called an "unprecedented agreement" to raise the baseline level of annual defense spending from 2% to 5% of GDP. He said many had considered this impossible.

"Now most countries have agreed to this," Trump added.
