Rome must maintain stable relations with Washington despite recent attacks by US President Donald Trump against Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said on SkyTG24.
According to Report, commenting on Trump's recent post in which he mocked Meloni, the Foreign Minister said that Rome would not officially respond to the situation and would continue to maintain relations with the United States.
"We are friends with the United States, which is our strategic partner and a key part of the West alongside Europe. Our relations are of fundamental importance: trade, political, and strategic. We were allies under Obama, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Biden, and therefore we continue political relations that go far beyond individual statements," Tajani said.
The Defence Minister shared the same view. Crosetto stressed that bilateral relations exist between states as a whole, while national leaders "come and go."
The US President posted a photo on social media showing him together with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, with the caption: "a restraining order is needed."
It should be noted that Trump recently said he did not intend to restore friendly relations with Meloni because she tried to wait out the Middle East conflict without taking part in it. Previously, in a short interview with La7, Trump also said that the Italian Prime Minister "begged" him to take a photo with her at the G7 summit in France. After this statement, Foreign Minister Tajani announced the cancellation of a planned visit to the United States scheduled for June 21-22.
