Syria and Cyprus sign agreement to lay Ebla submarine cable

Syria and Cyprus have signed an agreement to lay the Ebla submarine cable, which is scheduled to become operational by early 2028, Syria's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said.

According to SANA, cited by Report, the project is being implemented as part of efforts to modernize Syria"s international communications channels and diversify communication routes.

According to the ministry, the agreement was signed between the Syrian Telecom Company, Cyprus"s Submarine Cable Authority (Cyta), and US-based UNIFI Communications Inc.

The new cable will connect the city of Tartus with the TATCYNOS submarine cable station in Cyprus. It will comprise 24 pairs of optical fibers, providing an initial capacity of 31 terabits per second (Tbps) when commissioned, with the potential to expand to 370 Tbps.

The project is expected to become operational in early 2028 and will provide Syria with a direct connection through Cyta"s networks to European and global networks.
