Spain records 3,084 heat-related deaths in May-July

Spain recorded 3,084 heat-related deaths in May, June and July amid extreme heat, Report informs, citing Cadena SER.

The radio station said the figure was more than twice as high as in 2025, when 1,480 deaths were recorded during the same period.

The vast majority of deaths, 3,015, were among people over the age of 65.

Earlier, Spain's State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, said July 2026 was among the three hottest months recorded in the country. The preliminary average temperature was 25.7 C, matching the historic record set in 2022, while average daily highs were even higher, at 34 C.

The situation has been worsened by prolonged heat and a lack of rainfall, making this July Spain's driest since 1961.
