US forces intercepted and sank a group of vessels operating as a floating refueling station for illicit drug-trafficking operations in the Eastern Pacific on September 5, Report informs, citing US Southern Command.
SOUTHCOM said forces from Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM) carried out the operation after intelligence confirmed that the vessels were supporting the Los Choneros organization, which it described as a violent narco-terrorist group.
Individuals removed from the main vessel were transferred to Ecuadorian authorities.
After the vessel was cleared and its crew disembarked, US forces sank the main vessel along with the attached support vessels.
SOUTHCOM said JTF-WHEM would continue operations aimed at dismantling logistical networks supporting drug trafficking in the Western Hemisphere.
