School fire in Kenya leaves 16 students dead, dozens injured

A fire at a girls' school in central Kenya has left 16 students dead.
According to BBC News Africa, cited by Report, at least 74 people were also hospitalized with injuries following the incident.
The Kenyan Red Cross said the fire was recorded at 3:30 a.m. local time on May 28. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined.
According to Associated Press, fires in Kenyan boarding schools occur regularly. Some are linked to arson, while others are caused by electrical faults.
The deadliest school fire in Kenya's recent history occurred in 2001, when 67 students died in a dormitory fire in Machakos County.
In 2024, another school fire in central Kenya claimed the lives of 21 students.
