S. Korea's special prosecutor demanding fine of over $7,000 against former president

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was acquitted at trial after being separately indicted on charges of perjury in the insurrection case involving former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, has been asked to pay a fine on appeal, Report informs referring to the Seoul Economic Daily.

At the final hearing of Yoon's perjury case held on August 19 before the Seoul High Court's Criminal Division 1, presided over by Chief Judge Yoon Sung-sik, the special counsel team led by Cho Eun-suk asked the court to "overturn the original ruling and impose a fine of 10 million won [about $7,200]."

The verdict is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on the 16th of next month.

The special counsel said it had considered the practicality of carrying out a sentence in seeking a fine, citing the fact that separate insurrection-related trials involving Yoon are underway.

Yoon was sentenced to life in prison in the first-instance trial of the insurrection ringleader case and to 30 years in prison in the general treason case, both of which are now on appeal.

In the case of obstructing his arrest by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, a seven-year prison sentence was finalized by the Supreme Court.
