Zelenskyy says death toll from Russian strike on Kyiv rises to 17, with 44 injured – UPDATED

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the death toll from a large-scale Russian strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region has risen to 17, while the number of injured has increased to 44.

According to Report, the Ukrainian president said in a post on X that Russian forces launched 24 ballistic missiles, four Zircon/Oniks missiles, and 115 drones at the Ukrainian capital and the surrounding region, many of which were jet-powered.

He said the main targets of the attack were civilian infrastructure facilities, including private company warehouses, a brewery, construction materials storage sites, logistics facilities, infrastructure sites, and a railway station.

Zelenskyy stressed that additional supplies of interceptors for missile defense systems could have prevented the loss of lives.

"Partners who are not yet ready to play a more active role in providing interceptors can help by imposing new sanctions. A significant part of Russia"s ballistic missile production is still not covered by sanctions. Even now. New steps are needed from the G7, the European Union, and everyone who supports the protection of life," he said.

Russian forces launched overnight attacks on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and the surrounding region on August 5, killing 15 people and injuring 41 others, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service, cited by Report.

The agency said 14 people were killed and 26 injured in the Kyiv region. All of the wounded are receiving necessary medical treatment.

Large-scale fires broke out at warehouse and logistics facilities in the settlement of Velyka Dymerka and the villages of Kvitneve and Peremoha in Brovary district. In Fastiv district, emergency crews extinguished burning vehicles on the grounds of one of the enterprises.

In the city of Kyiv, one person was killed and 15 others were injured, the State Emergency Service said.

A total of 680 emergency responders and 140 pieces of equipment have been deployed to deal with the aftermath of the attacks.
