Riots have broken out in Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, following a knife attack that took place in the northern part of the city on Monday evening.
According to the BBC, cited by Report, several houses and vehicles were set on fire, while all public transport services were temporarily suspended.
Protests also took place in Derry, Antrim, Newtownabbey, Ballymena, and Bangor. While some demonstrations remained peaceful, violence erupted in several areas. A group of around 100 masked individuals in east Belfast reportedly kicked in doors and smashed windows. A significant number of those involved were teenagers. Trash bins and a bus were also set ablaze.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service responded to 62 incidents on Tuesday evening alone. Police have announced that their presence on the streets will be increased in the coming days.
The protests were linked to public anger over the recent death of 18-year-old student Henry Novak, whose family alleges police negligence contributed to his death. The demonstrations later escalated into clashes with law enforcement.
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old Sudanese man is due to appear in court on Wednesday on charges of attempted murder. He also faces charges of possessing a bladed article in a public place and making threats to kill.
