Qatar has no intention of taking part in the United States operation to exert economic pressure on Iran, Report informs, citing Interfax referencing a statement by Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"We are talking about sanctions imposed by one party against another, not UN sanctions. We have not taken any decision on this matter. Our priority is to ensure that all parties return to negotiations and find a solution to this crisis," the ministry spokesman stated.
He noted that Qatar is prepared to join sanctions only "if they are approved at the international level."
Furthermore, Al-Ansari emphasized that the measures planned by Washington against Iran do not directly affect Qatar.
"Qatar maintains a neutral stance and does not support any party to the conflict," the diplomat added.
Earlier in August, US authorities announced the start of a campaign to exert additional economic pressure on Iran. Among other things, Washington plans measures against countries that continue certain trade operations with Tehran.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly called on Washington's allies to join in pressing Iran.
