Qatar emir, Trump discuss efforts to ease US-Iran tensions

Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation to discuss efforts to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran, Report informs.

The office of the head of the Arab state announced this.

The sides reviewed the latest developments in the region, particularly steps to de-escalate tensions between the United States and Iran and bring their positions closer together, which was said to increase the chances of reaching a lasting diplomatic settlement to the crisis.

According to the statement, Trump praised Qatar's role in supporting diplomatic efforts and facilitating dialogue between the sides to strengthen regional security.

For his part, the emir of Qatar stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and the parties' commitment to implementing the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. He also noted the need to support international initiatives aimed at reducing tensions.

The sides also reaffirmed the importance of continued coordination on regional and international issues.
