New president of European Parliament to be elected on January 18

At the plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) on January 18, elections will be held for a new president of the EU Legislative Assembly, Deputy European Parliament Spokesperson Delphine Colard said, Report informs referring to Interfax.
Candidates for the post of chairperson can be represented either by a political faction or by a group of deputies representing a twentieth part of the parliament, that is, 36 deputies, she noted.
She added that nominations for the first round of elections should be submitted on January 17, by 5:00 p.m. local time. The list of candidates will be announced on the same day in the evening.
The president of the European Parliament is elected for 2.5 years.
