The drone shot down over Romania was likely Russia, NATO headquarters spokesman, US Army Colonel Martin O'Donnell said, according to Reuters, cited by Report.
"Further details of Sunday's incident remain under investigation, but the drone appears to have been Russian," he said.
The military official stressed that the alliance remains on heightened alert and is prepared to defend itself against any threat.
Romania's Ministry of National Defence reported the incident earlier today. The ministry did not specify the origin of the drone. According to the ministry, the drone was detected by radar as it entered Romanian airspace from Moldova. The wreckage crashed between settlements in an uninhabited area.
