French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed surprise over the latest escalation of tensions between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
According to Report, Macron made the remarks while responding to a question from the Italian news agency ANSA.
"I was surprised," Macron told reporters.
The French president added that he will meet with Meloni on June 25 at the intergovernmental summit in Antibes and intends to discuss the incident with her.
Trump stated in a brief interview with Italy's La7 television channel that Prime Minister Meloni had "begged" him to take a photograph with her during the G7 summit in France.
Meloni, in turn, accused Trump of lying and said she was disappointed by his behavior. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also announced the cancellation of his planned visit to the United States scheduled for June 21–22.
Disagreements had previously arisen between Trump and Meloni on international issues, including differing assessments of comments made by Pope Leo XIV regarding the US and Israeli military operation against Iran.
