Japan earthquake leaves more than 95,000 homes without water

More than 95,000 houses and apartments in Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's Kyushu Island, where a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck on July 28, remain without water supply, Report informs, citing Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

At the same time, water supply has been fully restored in neighboring Nagasaki Prefecture.

Water is being delivered to the disaster zone by tank trucks, including by units of Japan's Self-Defense Forces. About 4,600 military personnel have been involved in the rescue operation.

According to local authorities, 64 medical facilities in Kumamoto have no electricity or water supply. A total of 415 temporary shelters have been opened for those affected, housing more than 14,000 people.

People have mainly been accommodated in school gyms and other public buildings. Many of them do not have air conditioning, increasing the risk of mass heatstroke amid hot weather. Forecasters say temperatures in the disaster zone could reach 40 C.
