Iran confirms complete closure of shipping through Strait of Hormuz

Iran's newly established authority responsible for managing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz has confirmed the decision to completely close the strategically important waterway for an indefinite period following a statement issued overnight by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to Report, citing The Times of Israel, the authority announced:

"Due to the tensions caused by the aggression of American forces in the region, as well as the announcement made last night by Iran's armed forces, the Strait of Hormuz will be closed until further notice."

The authority also called on shipping companies and vessel operators that had already received permission to transit the strait to await further instructions.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important routes for the transportation of oil and liquefied natural gas. A significant share of global energy exports from the Gulf states passes through the waterway. The closure of the strait could have a substantial impact on global energy markets and international shipping.
