Brussels considers trade relations between the European Union and the United States to be deeply integrated and mutually beneficial and expects Washington to fulfill its previously made commitments, European Commission Spokesperson Olof Gill said at a briefing in Brussels, commenting on US President Donald Trump's announcement in Ankara of his intention to cease all trade with Spain, Report informs.
"The Commission has been very clear and consistent in its position on this issue, and our approach will not change. Trade between the European Union and the United States is deeply integrated and mutually beneficial. Therefore, it is in our common interest to maintain this relationship. This is particularly important in a time of global instability," Gill stated.
He recalled that last year the EU and the US signed a joint statement, and Brussels "expects the US to fulfill the commitments made within this joint statement, just as the European Union has fulfilled them."
According to Gill, the European Commission "will always ensure the full protection of the interests of the European Union and all its Member States" and will continue to advocate for "stable, predictable, and mutually beneficial transatlantic trade."
When asked about the possible consequences of a hypothetical halt to trade relations with Spain, a European Commission representative declined to discuss details. "If the moment comes when I deem it necessary to explain this in detail, I will do so," he said.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to halt all trade with Spain.
