Fire in Barcelona metro causes mass smoke poisoning

A fire in the Barcelona metro has resulted in 137 people suffering from smoke inhalation, with 40 hospitalized.

According to Report, citing La Vanguardia, the incident occurred in the evening between the Clot and Glòries stations.

The train driver spotted flames about 50 meters ahead, stopped the train, and called rescuers. However, due to heavy smoke, passengers – around 300 onboard – opened the doors themselves and evacuated through the tunnel before firefighters arrived.

Preliminary information suggests the fire was caused by damage to the tunnel's contact network. Metro services were almost completely halted, with operations expected to resume on the morning of July 28.
