Finland plans to reintroduce anti-personnel mines into its armed forces starting January 2026.
According to Report, citing broadcaster Yle and the country’s Land Forces, Finland officially notified the United Nations of its withdrawal from the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel mines on July 10, 2025. The denunciation of the agreement will take effect in January next year.
“The Land Forces will reintroduce anti-personnel mines into service starting January next year,” the defense ministry stated.
Land Forces engineer Riku Mikkonen added that beginning in January 2026, development of measures to rapidly deploy the mines will commence, supplementing the existing defense system.
