Six killed in ferry accident in Indonesia – UPDATED

Indonesian rescuers have recovered the bodies of six people after the Virgo Transport 8 ferry sank in the Java Sea.

Report informs, citing the Associated Press, that the Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office said 130 passengers and crew members remain missing, while at least 107 people have been rescued.

The ferry was carrying 243 people and was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo.

The vessel was also transporting 89 vehicles.

According to the office, the ship's captain reported rough seas with waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) high before sending a distress signal and saying that the vessel had begun to list.

Authorities later received information that the ferry had capsized. Rescue teams, eight vessels, including four military ships, and two helicopters have been deployed in the search and rescue operation.
