Extreme heatwave in Spain claims 5,232 lives, daily mortality data shows

An anomalous heatwave in Spain has claimed the lives of 5,232 people, Report informs, citing Spanish media referencing data from the daily mortality monitoring system (MoMo).

Of the total number of fatalities, 2,147 occurred in August.

"Thus, these figures have exceeded the indicators of the two most 'deadly' summer seasons since 2015, when MoMo began recording statistical data on mortality. For instance, 4,789 deaths were registered in 2022, and 3,035 in 2023," the report stated.

Furthermore, it is noted that these figures have not reached the level of the historic summer of 2003, when approximately 13,000 people died from high temperatures in Spain, prompting the Ministry of Health to develop and implement a plan to prevent the negative impact of heat on human health.
