The EU has mobilized €5 million in emergency assistance for Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes killed more than 1,000 people and left many others trapped under collapsed buildings, Report informs via TVP World.
Alongside financial support, the bloc has also activated its civil protection mechanism, under which several member states have sent search-and-rescue teams, firefighters and medical personnel to assist emergency operations in Venezuela, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Sunday after speaking with Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez.
The EU's Copernicus satellite system is also supporting emergency responders with geospatial data and satellite imagery to help assess damage and coordinate rescue operations on the ground, she added.
"Europe stands with Venezuela in this hour of need," Kallas said.
