EU delays decision on extending Russia sanctions over Slovakia

European Union ambassadors have agreed to extend restrictions against Russian individuals and legal entities for another seven days to allow more time to reach agreement on renewing the sanctions against Russia.

According to Report, citing Interfax-Ukraine, a spokesperson for Ireland's presidency of the Council of the EU told journalists in Brussels that the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) met again this afternoon to discuss extending the sanctions regime.

However, the sides failed to reach consensus because of Slovakia's position.

"To give member states additional time to fully consider the proposals on extending the sanctions, COREPER agreed to prolong the regime by seven days, until midnight on Tuesday, September 22. The legal procedures required for the decision to enter into force are now being finalized," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that consultations would continue, followed by further discussions in COREPER.
