The European Union has announced a €200 million investment package for Greenland under the Global Gateway strategy, seeking to strengthen cooperation amid the Arctic's growing strategic importance for Europe, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during her visit to Nuuk.
According to Report's European bureau, during the visit, the EU, Greenland and Denmark also signed a new joint declaration on expanding cooperation in energy, critical raw materials, digital infrastructure, fisheries, education and security.
"Greenland can count on the EU," von der Leyen said, describing the island as a "strategic ally and reliable friend."
Part of the new investment will go toward developing satellite communications, modernizing energy infrastructure and expanding the use of renewable energy, as well as supporting mining projects, tourism, housing construction and small businesses.
The EU also intends to strengthen ties with Greenland in the extraction of rare earth metals, which are of strategic importance to European industry.
Von der Leyen has previously said the EU seeks to strengthen its presence in the Arctic. The European Commission has proposed allocating €530 million to Greenland under the EU's next budget for 2028–2034, more than double the current level of funding.
